Hello and thank you for your interest in Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT).
If you are searching for an immensely rewarding and challenging clinical Non-Executive Director role then look no further.
As an organisation Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has struggled to provide the quality of care that we would wish to provide, and our service users and carers deserve. This is despite the extraordinary efforts of our hard working, committed and professional staff. The CQC report published in April 2022 found that we have been failing to provide consistent, high quality mental health services. We are rated as ‘inadequate’ overall, and this is the fourth time in less than a decade. We are subject to a statutory improvement notice, and are in the national recovery support programme.
But this time our ‘turnaround’ is going to be different and sustained. We will provide the people of Norfolk and Suffolk the high quality, safe and accessible mental health services they expect from us. We are a cohesive, strong, and values driven unitary Board with high ambitions. Our Executive team has been refreshed with significant recent appointments; I am the new Chair, and we have a new CEO who has only been in post for nine months. We have a strong and vibrant Council of Governors who are unafraid to make constructive challenge. We will be making changes at pace that are both lasting and sustainable. As part of our improvement we will work with our staff, service users, their carers, and our local partners, including the voluntary sector, to achieve improved and consistent mental health services.
We are focusing on a small number of achievable priority areas; safe and accessible services; a continued focus on our culture and our staff; and ‘turbo charging’ community mental health services across Norfolk and Suffolk. All this is being led by our able and dedicated Executive team with strong support from NHSEI.
Strong partnerships will be key to our success. We are committed to embedding coproduction and service user and carer engagement in everything we do. Our health and care partners share our ambition and are investing in our improvement. There is so much to do alongside our communities to tackle the wider determinants of health, including health inequalities, which have such an impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing. The pandemic has, of course, been a significant challenge. It has had an impact on the nation’s mental health, and we have seen a big increase in demand for specialist mental health support. The response to the pandemic has required everyone to work very differently. We will draw on the lesson to become a cutting edge mental health trust providing modern, tailored and accessible services.
There has never been a better, more challenging, or more rewarding time to join our Board as a clinical Non-Executive Director. We are looking for an open, approachable, and engaging individual with a strong clinical background and a genuine passion for excellent mental health provision. You will provide challenge, support and diversity of opinion to our unitary Board team. You will be a strong champion for the best interests of our service users and carers, our values, whilst listening to all our stakeholders to make sure we fully understand, and are able to respond to, the challenges and opportunities ahead.
The CQC report is our launchpad to lasting change. Our partners across the two integrated care systems are committed to making mental health ‘everyone’s business’. We have emergent plans to ‘turbo charge’ the community mental health provision. If you are still reading, this shows us you are up for the challenge!
