Deputy Chief Nurse (Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust)

Portsmouth is a vibrant city on the south coast with convenient access to the South Downs National Park and the Isle of Wight, just 90 minutes from London Waterloo by train. Whether your passion is the outdoors, with beaches, sailing, kite surfing, horse-riding and hiking on our doorstep, or culture, with two theatres and a major concert venue in the city, Portsmouth has something for everyone.

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is one of the largest and most modern hospital Trusts on the south coast. Most of our services are provided at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, with 1,200 beds and a rich history as a military hospital dating back more than a century. With a turnover of £600m, we provide comprehensive secondary care and a number of specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across Southeast Hampshire. We also offer some tertiary services to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 8,732 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth. Our maternity services deliver around 4,868 babies per year, making it one of the largest maternity services on the South Coast.

We have a strong track record in research and innovation across the Trust and have taken steps to further enhance this reputation with the support of our university partners. We are proud of our strong military links and host the largest of the UK’s four military hospital units, Joint Hospital Group (South). We are a major provider of education and training for clinicians in the South-East of England and in July 2022 we were proud to be rated as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission for the second time. This is an extremely exiting time to be joining our Trust as we strive to achieve our ambition of delivering excellence in care to our patients and communities.

We have an exciting and rewarding opportunity to join our Trust as Deputy Chief Nurse. Reporting to the Chief Nurse, the Deputy Chief Nurse supports our Executive team in the coordination and delivery of quality, safety and safeguarding across the Trust. As Deputy Chief Nurse, you will lead the development and implementation of our corporate Quality Strategy, and support delivery of the patient equality and diversity agenda. The role of Deputy Chief Nurse is a crucial and pivotal role within our leadership team and will provide advice and guidance to the Chief Nurse, Trust Board, and Divisional Management Teams regarding issues that support quality and safety.

The successful postholder will have significant experience in issues relating to quality, patient safety, safeguarding and clinical governance. We are looking to speak with credible and motivated senior Nurses, with a successful track record of leading and inspiring teams. The Deputy Chief Nurse will provide leadership, strategic direction, advice, supervision and support to nurses, midwives, AHPs and clinical professionals throughout the Trust, ensuring that high quality clinical practice is integrated and embedded into all patient services.

In return, you could be part of an upward journey, in which you will be supported to develop your career into becoming a future Chief Nurse.

We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and welcome applications from underrepresented groups. In recruiting to our Trust, we are committed to equality of opportunity for all. We believe that the best organisations are those that reflect the communities they serve. We especially welcome applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic heritage, LGBTQ+ communities, and from people with lived experience of disability.
