Chair

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust has supported older people for over 30 years. Our vision – better lives for older people – is as relevant today as it was when the Charity was founded to provide an alternative to the prevalent, ageist and rather depressing societal view of getting old and later living.

We are the pioneers of supported independent living and our ambition is to remain innovators; providing best-in-class retirement living opportunities and advocating on behalf of older people. Nobody else builds villages the size of our largest villages. Nobody else has an affordable multi-tenure model that allows residents from all walks of life to live in one of our locations. Nobody else has a truly integrated model that focuses on developing communities, encouraging active lifestyles and volunteering, as well as building homes and providing care. Nobody else has worked with universities to validate the benefits of what they do and use the research findings to drive innovation. Our model is genuinely unique, much admired and really does change people’s lives for the better.

While it is not clear what the lasting impact of the Covid-19 pandemic will be on the Charity, and whilst our current focus is supporting our residents and staff through these unprecedented times, we will remain ambitious as a Charity and ambitious for our resident’s well-being – we have no doubt that demand for what we do, whilst temporarily on hold, will continue to grow and our challenge will be to grow sustainably – while remaining independent to protect our unique model.

To help us on the next stage of our development, we are looking to appoint a new Chair to provide strategic leadership to the Board. S/he will have previous executive and non-executive board experience, as well as a demonstrable understanding of operating in a regulated sector. Most importantly s/he will be able to balance and combine the delivery of our charitable objectives with a commercial approach. Beyond this, s/he should be an inclusive leader with strong communication and influencing skills, excellent judgement and the ability to network for and advocate on behalf of ExtraCare.

If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you. Please contact our recruitment partners, Rhiannon Smith and Jenny Adrian, at Hunter Healthcare on 07939 250362 to have a confidential discussion.
